    A little business trip

    US Capitol Building

I was in D.C. for work this past week (well, really I was staying in Arlington, VA). I attended a really great conference, but also found some time to sneak around the city by foot and also by bike. My hotel rented free bicycles, so on one free afternoon I borrowed one and toured all over the city and monuments. It was a fantastic day! I also was able to visit the Holocaust Memorial Museum and the monuments by night as well. While it was a great trip, I missed Mike and the kids and was very ready to be home when my last flight landed in Rochester.

    One tooth less

    First lost tooth!

Benjamin has had his first loose tooth for about a month and has been so excited for it to finally fall out. He pulled and twisted it as much as he could lately, hoping it would come out. Yesterday while watching the Packers game at a restaurant in LaCrosse, he pulled it so much that it was hanging by a thread and causing him a lot of pain. Mom came to the rescue and although that tooth had made me so squeamish, I found the strength (not physical) to take him into the bathroom and yank it out once and for all. He was so pleased with himself and so excited to tell everyone about his tooth. Daddy wrapped it up and carefully placed it in his pocket. When we got home, we put it into an envelope and Benjamin placed it under his pillow at bedtime.

This tooth fairy business has been bothering me since I knew we'd be soon playing the role. How do you sneak in their room at night? How do you pull out the hidden tooth without waking them up? How much money do we leave? This would be a good time for that parents' handbook that doesn't exist.  Daddy took this job thankfully and successfully sneaked into Benjamin's room at night to make the switch undetected.  Benjamin is a mover and shaker when he sleeps, so he had some trouble finding it in the morning, but was very happy to find "just one dollar??!"  Kids these days.

    Our Ultramarathon Man

This weekend Mike ran the longest distance of his life - 31.1 miles through some very difficult trails at the North Face Endurance Challenge near Milwaukee. The kids and I braved cool early morning (VERY early morning) temperatures to watch him achieve this amazing feat. Although he said he may never need to do an ultra-distance ever again now, he was happy with his time - 5 hours, 10 minutes, 53 seconds - 38th place out of 183 runners!  We are so proud of him!

We had a great weekend away in Wisconsin with the race, a visit with the Ryan Family cousins and watching the Packers win in friendly territory!

    Bikes, Running and Birthdays

    Wednesday, September 14, 2011

While Mike was out of town with his brother Joe volunteering at Ironman Wisconsin (more on that later), the kids and I visited my parents to celebrate my Mom's birthday. We took her to Snuffy's Malt Shop for some rootbeer floats and burgers and then to the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden to see the famous Spoonbridge and Cherry for the first time. It was a beautiful day and we all enjoyed relaxing in the shade at the Garden.

I woke up early Sunday morning to participate in my very first cycling event. I had signed up for the St. Paul Classic Bike Tour and was both excited and nervous about the event. A few weeks before I had purchased a new road bike and had only been on it one time before, so I wasn't sure how comfortable I would be with it. Plus, it is always harder to do these kind of things alone. But the ride turned out to be so much fun and I am so glad I did it. My bike and I had some serious bonding time together, it was great. I brought my camera along on the ride and got some great shots, here are a few:

So as I mentioned, Mike was in Wisconsin with his brother volunteering for Ironman.  The reason why they volunteered was because this gave them the chance to register early for Ironman 2012.  Both boys are going to race next year in what may possibly be the biggest race of their lives: 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run.  Yowza!

    First Day of School

    Tuesday, September 06, 2011

    First days of school

Today is the first day of first grade for Benjamin.  He has been so excited about starting school for a long time now.  All weekend he's been saying "I wish it was Tuesday!"  So now Tuesday is here, his new backpack is packed and he walked into school with a spring in his step.  Montessori school separates kids into classes that each have three different grade levels in it.  So this year is his first year in "E1," which includes first, second and third grade students.  There are a lot of changes as he moves up this year including a new teacher, a locker of his own (last year he had just a cubby in the classroom) and homework.  Believe it or not, but he is most looking forward to the homework...for now anyway!

This weekend we met up with a bunch of Schmitts at a park in Cannon Falls (halfway between us and the Twin Cities).  Benjamin and Lucy both enjoyed playing with their cousins and exploring the park.  Here are some photos from the day:

    Baby Doll

    Wednesday, August 31, 2011

    Those eyes!

I've never been one to believe the nature vs. nurture argument - wherein babies are thought to already possess personality traits (including gender differences) at birth. I'm definitely more of a nurture vs. nature girl - wherein babies pick up personality traits through interaction with others and their environment post birth. However, Lucy is making me wonder if nature doesn't have something to do with who she is/who she will become. Before she was born, but after we knew she was going to be a girl, we received a few soft "My First Baby" dolls. They're all pink, but vary in color shade, texture, inner rattle, size and adorableness of the face. We hadn't made an effort to encourage her to play with these dolls, but rather they've just been laying around along with all of the hand-me-down toys we have left from the baby Benjamin years. These other toys aren't necessarily boy toys, but they're more gender non-specific than the baby dolls. Recently, Lucy has been playing with the dolls more than anything else. She cuddles them, kisses them and drags them around the house while trying to crawl with just one free hand. We really noticed her attachment to these "babies" when she refused to sleep at nap time this weekend because her baby was laying on the floor. She stood in her crib and cried and cried. When I gave her the doll (after finally realizing why she wasn't sleeping), she went right to sleep with no fuss. After she had slept for a couple hours, Mike went in to wake her up and she was sleeping on her stomach, clutching the doll. It was adorable. Here you can see her playing and crawling all while bringing her baby along -

Schmitt + Andrews at Tiger Tracks 5k

This weekend all of Familie Schmitt along with Grandma Chris and Grandpa Ed raced at the Minnesota Zoo in the Tiger Tracks 5k. It was Grandma and Grandpa's first time at a race not as spectators, but as participants! Mike and Benjamin finished the race in about 34 minutes (an awesome pace for a six year old!) and the rest of us pushed Lucy across the finish line in about 50 minutes. It was a beautiful morning and we all had a great time. I think the newbies caught the racing bug and are looking forward to finishing more 5k races.

    Ten Months

    Lucy 10 Months
How could this be? This can't be true. Lucy is ten months old. She is just two short months away from her first birthday and I refuse to believe it. My baby girl cannot be this old!! I won't allow it.

I attempted to take some 10 month photos of her at our home this past weekend, but something funky was happening with my camera and all of the shots are very noisy and blurry. I am not happy with them. But I am happy with the smiling adorable little girl IN the photos, especially in her new Beatles onesie from cousin Erin! It is nearly impossible to take a photo of Lucy without capturing a runny nose. I swear she had 3 whole days without one last week. But now both she and her brother are dealing with an awful summer cold and we have TWO runny noses in our house. Luckily Benjamin knows how to wipe his own nose.

Colorado Rocky Mountain High - part 2

    Monday, July 25, 2011

For the second part of our trip, we drove down to the Colorado Springs area to a cottage we had rented in Manitou Springs. We stayed at the Town N' Country Cottages where we had a two room cottage that was just perfect for our needs. Lucy and Benjamin stayed in the living room and we had a bedroom all to ourselves. We swam in the pool and Benjamin loved the little playground they had.

We did a bunch of the typical touristy stuff while in this area like hanging out at the Manitou Springs Penny Arcade, driving up Pikes Peak and visiting the Royal Gorge and Garden of the Gods. Here are some highlights:

We also took a slightly adventurous driving route from the Royal Gorge to Cripple Creek called The Shelf Road. It is a gravel road that is just what its called, a shelf along the side of some mountains. The drop-off down to the bottom of the canyon is quite close to where you drive and the scenery is stunning. Mike and I always seem to get ourselves into adventurous driving when we travel (Saddle Road in Hawaii, Ring of Kerry on St. Patrick's Day in Ireland, etc etc), so we jumped at the chance to try this route out. We had a blast driving it! We stopped to take a few photos of the scenery and I even shot a video of how crazy the road was (to be posted at a later date).

We had such a wonderful trip and created so many family memories. We all look forward to our return to Colorado very much. It was a sad time leaving those amazing mountains behind for the corn fields of our midwest.

    Colorado Rocky Mountain High

Familie Schmitt has made yet another successful trek across the plains to Colorado. This was our third trip out west to the mountains. The first time was all the way back in 2004, right before we found out we were expecting Benjamin. The second trip was in 2009 when he was just 4 years old (read about that one here). And now we did the trip as a family of four and it was so wonderful.

As I alluded to in previous blog posts, we took a chance by attempting our drive out there over night. We left Tuesday at 9pm and arrived Wednesday at about 11am, Mountain Time. I took the first seven or so hours of the trip and when I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer, passed the wheel over to Mike just before 4am. Mike brought us all the way to Boulder. We were both surprised at how easy and painless the drive seemed. There, of course, we some moments when each of us were driving and we were sick of being on the road, but honestly it wasn't too bad! Both kids slept like champs and after we stopped in North Platte, Nebraska (NOT recommended) for a very early breakfast (6:00am), those of us not driving even got in a little extra shut eye. We made Pearl Street in Boulder our first stop and after strolling around the shops and playing in a fountain to cool off, we ducked into a local restaurant for lunch.

    Hangin' out in Boulder

Next we took a drive up Boulder Canyon. Before we left, I had rented a new lens for my camera from BorrowLenses.com - a Tokina 11-16mm and I was eager to try it out on some mountains. The lens was great for capturing wide spaces, but the quality of photos wasn't as good as I get from my go-to lens, the "Nifty Fifty." I was happy to have it along though and it proved useful in large areas like Pikes Peak and the Garden of the Gods later in the trip.

For the first two nights we stayed in the Hyatt Summerfield Suites in Broomfield, which is directly between Boulder and Denver. It was a great location for exploring that area and the hotel itself was wonderful. They had a nightly welcome reception with appetizers that largely served as our dinner for those first two evenings and a great breakfast every morning as well. Our room was a suite with a partial room divider between the living room area and bedroom area. We also had a full kitchen, which served as Lucy's bedroom.

Before we left home we bought some tickets to a Colorado Rockies baseball game. They played the Milwaukee Brewers. We cheered for the Rockies and they beat the pants off of the Brewers! It looked like it was going to storm during the entire game, but it must just have been some kind of crazy mountain weather effect, because it never rained - thank goodness.

    Makenna is 1!

    Momma and Makenna
We traveled over to Milwaukee this weekend to attend Makenna's first birthday party. It was so fun to see my family and it was a beautiful day for the party.

I think Makenna enjoyed her cupcake!

Lucy and Benjamin had fun seeing their Great Aunts, Great Uncles and even Great Grandma.

After the party wrapped up and we spent some time relaxing at the hotel, we headed over to Erin and Dennis's house for dinner and some play time. The kids all get along so well. Makenna was so pleased to have Lucy there to hug and wrestle and Benjamin enjoyed reading books to Kelsey and also getting some hugs from Makenna.

The next day we all met up at the Milwaukee Public Museum, which was a great place to let the kids explore. It is a natural science and history museum and is full of dinosaurs, bugs, creepy mannequins and historical scenes.

We parked Makenna's stroller next to Lucy's stroller and they were so cute - they held hands! Makenna is such a sweet girl, she is always smiling and giving hugs -- even to strangers!

They had a little display of bugs that you could touch and hold. Benjamin was very brave and held a couple of them. His favorite was the stick bug, which enjoyed Benjamin's arm.

For lunch we stopped by the Milwaukee Public Market for a variety of different lunch options. We had everything from Greek food to Hawaiian food to Indian food to Mexican food! It was a tasty lunch!! Kelsey topped off her lunch with a giant cone.

Both Benjamin and Lucy were great in the car both on the way to Milwaukee and back home.  We were considering this trip as a kind of test-run for our big vacation to Colorado.  We have loads of car toys and activity books packed up for the kids.  We are attempting our very first ever overnight drive for this trip, so it is bound to be an adventure!!  When we return, we will undoubtedly have lots of photos and stories to share...
